Plato on Democracy

Plato hated democracy. He hated it good. His argument was that if you are trying to get a ship to a destination you want the navigator to navigate it. You wouldn't vote, and just have whoever is the most popular navigate it. The guy who makes sure everyone has enough rum and grob isn't necessarily the guy who knows how to navigate a ship. Yet this is what we do in democracy. Whoever is the most popular wins. Politics is becoming less and less about real politics by the day, so whatever theory you have that this isn't the case you can probably just throw out. Both sides do research on emotional phrases and topics that make it so that the masses don't pay attention to any real issues. They want the masses to like them based on emotional response because it is easier to appeal to emotion than reason. I don't really know of any political system to offer up that I would agree with 100% but there has to be something better out there.
