The Universe

I've been thinking a lot about the universe lately. Is our universe finite or infinite? Is it possible to reach the edge of the universe? I have read a few places where scientists say no there is no edge. But if there is no edge, would be able to travel through empty space for eternity, or is there an infinite amount of planets and other stuff in the universe? If we can't travel in this way, would the universe loop at some point? If the universe does loop, does the loop start from the same distance (ie is the universe in the shape of a sphere or is it some other shape)?
